The Childhood Retrospective Circumstances Study (PSID-CRCS) is a supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID)
and is the first study conducted by the PSID using the internet as the primary mode of data collection. PSID-CRCS was
supported by a program project grant from the National Institute on Aging (P01 AG029409). The goal of the study was to
design and collect a mixed mode (web or paper) module from household heads (‘reference persons’ after 2017) and, if
married/cohabitating, spouses/partners, about their childhood experiences. The data may be used to study early life
influences on adult health and economic outcomes.

As described in the CRCS User Guide,
the supplement was administered to 8,072 individuals aged 19 and older
(aged 19 by January 1, 2013) who were household heads/reference persons and spouses/partners in PSID families
that participated in the 2013 wave of PSID. The module contains data characterizing a) parents/guardians, parental
relationship quality; b) childhood health conditions; c) socioeconomic status; d) neighborhood quality; e) friendships;
f) school experiences; g) exposure to the criminal justice system; h) parent/guardian mental health; j)
relationship quality with parents/guardians; and k) young adult mentoring. As indicated in the
CRCS codebook ,
a subset of these data (i.e., variables contained in b), g), h), and j)) are available only under restricted contract.
